There are two main types of student loans: federal and private. Federal loans are offered by the government and eligibility is determined by the FAFSA. Private loans are offered by private lenders, such as banks. With loans, you are given money to pay your tuition upfront, and you pay it back, typically with interest, to whoever lent you the money. Different loans function differently, it all depends on how your lender works.  
You apply for FAFSA by going to and creating your own FSA ID and password. You will have to complete the form from this website. You will be asked to enter personal, family information that is needed to determine your eligibility for federal, state, and in some cases, institutional financial aid. If there are circumstances preventing you from getting parental information, please reach out to your Enrollment Counselor for guidance.  
Grants are like scholarships in that they are money you are awarded that you do not have to pay back. Grants can be based on many different criteria, such as GPA, financial need, and location of you or your school. Grants that you qualify for are automatically awarded and factored into your financial aid package at UC. One example is a Federal Pell Grant, which is given to students based on financial need determined by the FAFSA.  
Payment plans are an option that UC provides in order to help students pay their tuition in affordable installments rather than a large lump sum. With payment plans, your tuition is broken into monthly payments that are due on the 5th of each month. You can choose between a few payment options, depending on what fits your needs best. Options include paying in 4, 3, or 2 installments.
